We all have different perceptions, based on our cultural backgrounds and past experiences. What Thoreau mentions through his quotes revolves around our perceptions. 'Looking' at something can be a very generalized statement, intended towards everyone. When you 'look' at something, you do not give it much importance and consideration. In fact, in some cases, what you 'look' at is not remembered. However, 'seeing' is once you ponder upon it. When you add your opinions and thoughts to it. 'Seeing' something can be very varied, since it is depended on perception.
